Welcome to a Living Spark

My Second Innings Began with a Bamboo Flute

After a life built on structure and discipline, you would think settling into a quiet life would be easy. I spent 19 years in the Indian Navy, followed by another 25 years in the private sector. That’s 44 years of routine, of purpose, of knowing exactly what the next day held. When I finally retired to my home here in Dabolim, Goa, I thought I had earned the peace and quiet.

But silence can be a very loud thing.

My days were full, or at least, I tried to make them full. I kept myself physically active, went for walks, and did exercises to keep my mind sharp. I did everything you’re supposed to do in retirement. Yet, no matter how busy I was, there was always this nagging feeling in the background. It was a kind of emptiness, a sense that a vital piece of the puzzle was missing. I had a wonderful family and a comfortable life, but I felt adrift.

The truth is, a dream had been tucked away in the back of my mind since I was a young man of 21 or 22. It was a simple thought, really: “I want to learn to play the flute.” But life happens. A career in the Navy, raising a family, moving into the private sector—the years just piled up, and that little dream got buried deeper and deeper under decades of responsibility.

Then one day, everything changed. It was October of 2025. I was in Bangalore visiting my daughter and her family, spending time with my four-year-old granddaughter. We were just having a normal evening, and from a nearby home, a sound drifted through the air. It was a flute melody. It was so beautiful, so pure, that it just stopped me in my tracks. In that one moment, listening to that simple tune, my old dream wasn't just remembered; it was wide awake and demanding to be heard. It was as if that melody was a key that unlocked a door I had forgotten existed. I felt an immediate, unshakeable resolve. I decided, right then and there, that I was going to learn to play the flute. No more waiting.

The very next day, I went onto YouTube, searching for flute music. That’s when I stumbled upon a video by Guru ji Harsh Dave. Something about the way he spoke and played resonated with me. On November 2nd, I officially began my journey.

Now, many people talk about the struggles of learning an instrument and the moments they almost gave up. But honestly, in my entire journey so far, that thought has never once crossed my mind. Maybe it’s my military background, but I think it’s two things. First, the desire was so strong this time around. It wasn’t a casual hobby; it was something I felt I *had* to do. Second, and most importantly, the teaching method of Guruji and his team of mentors is just incredible. They guide you, they encourage you, and they make you practice in a way that builds you up, step by step. Of course, it wasn't easy. Making that first clear sound felt impossible. But every little squeak was a step forward, and I was determined to keep walking.

There was a specific moment, though, that I will never forget. I had been practicing for a little while, trying to piece together my first real song. It was "Hum Honge Kamyab" – "We Shall Overcome." I was sitting in a room, fumbling with the notes, trying to make it sound like something more than just breathy noises. My wife was in the other room, and she called out, “Are you playing ‘Hum Honge Kamyab’?”

That was it. That was the moment. For someone else to recognize the tune I was playing—it was like a switch flipped inside me. The feeling of satisfaction was immense. It gave me a jolt of confidence that was so powerful, so real. It was the first time I truly felt, deep in my bones, that this dream wasn't just a dream anymore. It was something I could actually achieve.

Since I started playing the flute, my life has changed in ways I never expected. I feel calmer, more centered, and yet, I have more energy than before. The emptiness I used to feel is gone. It's been replaced by music. There was also a specific fear that used to weigh on me. My father suffered from dementia as he grew older, and I always carried a quiet anxiety about my own cognitive health. But picking up the flute has helped me let go of that fear. I know that learning music, coordinating my breath and fingers, and keeping my brain engaged is one of the best things I can do for myself. The flute isn't just a source of joy; it's a tool for a healthier, happier life.

When I first picked up the flute, it felt like a foreign object in my hands—just a piece of bamboo with some holes in it. Today, after having completed my Flute Foundation Course, it feels completely different. It feels like an extension of myself. Holding it brings a sense of joy and a powerful feeling of, “Yes, I can do it.” It taught me that anything is possible with the right guidance, consistent practice, and a good dose of patience.

For me now, the flute is not just an instrument. It’s my companion. It’s the supporting stick I’ll lean on as I walk through the rest of my life, making it more beautiful with every note.
