My professional life is spent with blueprints and concrete, contributing to massive railway projects for the Government of India. As a civil engineer, I’ve dedicated my career to nation-building—laying tracks, erecting bridges, and connecting cities. It’s a world of precision, logic, and responsibility. But long before my first engineering project, another kind of building had already begun deep inside me.
My spiritual journey started back in the early 1990s. I was drawn to meditation and self-inquiry, and it quickly became the silent foundation of my life. Every day, I would sit for meditation. I would go to spiritual gatherings whenever I could. Even after I began my career in 1998, I kept up my spiritual discipline. I found a way to balance my demanding job with this quiet, inner exploration. Of course, I had simple joys too. I've always loved watching movies, and like most people these days, I spend my share of time browsing on my phone. But spirituality was always the anchor, the silent current running beneath everything else.
In all those years, I never thought a simple bamboo flute would change everything.
I had tried to learn it once before, way back in 1990 while I was in engineering school. I found a Carnatic music teacher and started with so much excitement. But the teacher was very slow, and I was a young, restless student. I didn't have the patience for it. After just two months, I quit. The flute disappeared from my life, and I completely forgot about it for 35 years.
Then, one day in June 2025, something shifted. I was just scrolling through Facebook, and a video of Shri Harsh Dave Sir appeared on my screen. He was talking about the flute, and as I listened, it felt like something more than just words. It was like a transmission. His calm assurance that anyone could learn touched something deep inside me. It felt like a flame that had gone out long ago was suddenly rekindled.
I told my wife about this strange, sudden calling I felt. Without a moment's hesitation, she said, “You should join.” Her immediate support was the final push I needed. I didn’t overthink it. I just signed up for the Flute Gandharvas Academy. It didn’t feel like I was choosing the flute; it felt like the flute was choosing me.
My journey started with great momentum, but I almost stopped before it truly began. After I finished the Flute Foundation Course, I had a thought. “This is good enough for me. What more do I need?” I had convinced myself that I would stop there.
Just then, I received an email about the Diamond Membership. My first reaction was doubt. Like any ordinary person, my mind started asking questions. “Is this just a business tactic? Are they just trying to sell another course?” I saw videos of senior students praising the membership, but my mind just dismissed it as a promotion.
But something else was echoing inside me—the sincere words of my Master, Shri Harsh Dave Sir. He had said that only those who are truly serious about the flute should join. I could feel the honesty and purity in his voice. It wasn't a sales pitch; it was an invitation. After thinking it over, and with my wife’s full support once again, I took a leap of faith and joined.
That single decision changed my life. After becoming a Diamond Member, my entire perspective shifted. I realized it wasn't just a membership; it was a door to a much deeper level of learning and inner transformation. My progress took off in a way I could never have imagined. By the grace of my Master, I completed the foundation course in 20 days, the next level in another 20 days, and cleared Level 1 in under five months. My Master called me the “fastest learner,” and his words weren’t just praise—they became a source of strength and responsibility that settled deep in my subconscious.
Among all instruments, the vibrations of the flute are special. They can touch the deepest part of your soul. A while back, I was learning Raag Hansdhwani for my Level 1 practice. I felt a little scared and hesitant. I thought, “Can I really play this? Am I good enough?”
One day, I decided to just surrender. I picked up my flute and started to play, not with effort, but with a feeling of letting go. What happened next is hard to explain. It didn’t feel like *I* was playing the flute. It felt like the flute was playing itself through me. The notes just flowed, one after another, so gracefully. I was so overwhelmed with emotion that I immediately made a video call to my wife. As I played the raag for her, tears started streaming down my face. I was playing and crying at the same time—not from sadness, but from a profound feeling of connection and gratitude. My soul had found its voice.
This connection has had a real, tangible effect on my life. In 2022, I went through a very difficult time when I was diagnosed with a blood clot in my brain. By God’s grace and through my years of meditation, I recovered. But even after recovery, I would get occasional headaches. After I started playing the flute, my health began to improve dramatically. I feel a sense of complete recovery now, not just physically but mentally. Simple things like a cold or fever rarely trouble me anymore.
The flute has become my therapy. No matter how stressful or tiring my day has been, I look forward to my evening Riyaz, my practice time. The moment I hold my flute, all the burdens of the world just dissolve. The flute absorbs my tiredness and gives me back peace. It is healing my family, too. My home feels more peaceful. The vibrations aren't just sound; they are an energy that brings serenity to everything around me.
When I first held the flute all those years ago, it felt like an impossible mountain to climb. Even when I started again, it felt difficult and distant.
Today, when I hold my flute, I don’t feel difficulty. I feel grace. I feel the invisible presence of my Guru guiding my breath. The flute is no longer just an instrument. It has become my prayer, my meditation. It is my life-fulfilling companion, and I never feel lonely.
Earlier, I used to play the flute. Now, I simply allow the flute to play through me.
