I am Narayana Rao R Deshpande, aged 76. After retiring as a Bank Officer from Indian Bank’s Malleshwaram Branch, I began administering Parimala Gurukula, an English medium school in my native place, Mudgal, Karnataka, as a social cause. At this stage of life, I did not expect that music would open an entirely new path for me.
I accidentally came across an advertisement for Flute Gandharvas on X. I was impressed by the way Mr. Harsh Dave presented the journey of learning the flute. That first encounter encouraged me to join as a Silver Member, and later I became a Life Member Diamond. Yet I was completely new to the world of music, and the beginning was not easy. Initially, I genuinely felt that perhaps I was not meant for this.
What kept me moving was the hand-holding support and the lucid teaching style of Mr. Harsh. Whenever I doubted myself, his guidance pushed me to continue. Guruji helped me understand that hard work is the only way forward and that nothing is impossible when effort remains calm and consistent. Slowly, what had seemed unfamiliar began to feel possible.
The melody of the flute held me firmly. Day by day, my confidence grew. Each submission became another small step, and receiving five stars from the mentors made me feel young again. Their encouragement was not merely a reward; it gave me the energy to practise, improve, and trust that age need not stand in the way of learning something new.
Inside me, the change has been profound. Playing the flute feels like meditation. The mind-blowing guidance, combined with calm and consistent effort, has increased my confidence. Life is changing and feels full of blossoms. Through the flute, I am experiencing an inner bliss that is difficult to describe but deeply real.
Today, the flute means more to me than an instrument. It has become my breath, almost a part of my respiratory system. When I hold it and play, I feel connected to something peaceful within myself. At 76, this journey has shown me that learning can begin at any time, and every breath can still carry a new melody.
